The Value of Ethics
Seeming legions of qualified and enthusiastic individuals stand ready to office advice and to give guidance for those seeking an optimal life as measured by some standard, usually financial or social in nature, or perhaps seeking something less tangible, but more rewarding, such as realizing an enhanced enjoyment of life. Though worthy endeavors for sure, and though achieving what we believe is our best life possible often necessitates a purposeful breaking free of whatever chains we believe bind us to our present life and our present way of thinking, nonetheless, despite our earnest efforts and desires, we are ever vulnerable to lose of all we possess, our wealth, our health, our reputation, and even the love and the admiration of others. In the end, we lose our lives. Yet while we inhabit this breathing world, is there one thing we cannot lose, unless we so desire? One thing that cannot be taken from us? One thing we lose if and only if we voluntarily surrender it? Yes, there is one thing: our virtue.
